A Heated Clash Over Real Estate

During the Lunar New Year holiday, President Lee Jae-myung and Jang Dong-hyeok, the leader of the People Power Party, engaged in a sharp negative battle regarding their property ownership.

On the 16th, President Lee shared a news link on X (formerly Twitter) highlighting that Jang owns six different houses. He publicly questioned Jang's perspective on regulations targeting multi-homeowners (people who own more than one residential property).

The Emotional Defense

In response, Jang Dong-hyeok expressed his distress, stating that he was visiting his 95-year-old mother in the countryside for the holiday.

"My elderly mother is deeply worried because of the President's post. An undutiful son weeps at the very start of the New Year."

Jang argued that the President was using "number games" to provoke public resentment, labeling the act of painting multi-homeowners as "devils" as a sign of amateur politics.

The Counterattack: 'The Reconstruction Lotto'

Jang did not stop at a defense; he launched a direct counter-offensive targeting the President's own assets. He specifically pointed to an apartment owned by President Lee in Bundang.

  • The Issue: A reconstruction project (the process of tearing down an old building to build a new, modern one).
  • The Potential Gain: An estimated 5 billion won in capital gains (the profit made from selling an asset at a higher price than it was bought).
  • The Demand: Jang demanded that the President clarify his plans for this "reconstruction lotto" apartment after he leaves office.

This clash highlights the sensitivity of real estate issues in politics, where owning a "smart single home" (a high-value property that guarantees profit) is often viewed as a point of contention.
